South-West Sardinia Itinerary: Sant'Antioco to Piscinas

My 3-day South-West Sardinia itinerary for couples: Sant'Antioco catacombs, Scivu speaking beach, Iglesias mining history, Piscinas 70m dunes. Off-season authentic adventure

3 Days Itinerary

For couples who gravitate toward off-season travel, active days, and cultural depth, Sardinia’s south-west coast offers a rare alchemy of wild landscapes, industrial archaeology, and serene villages. This three-day itinerary explores the rugged Sulcis-Iglesiente and Costa Verde regions—a territory far removed from the crowded resorts of the north, perfect for those seeking intimacy and adventure.

Day 1 – Sant’Antioco: Ancient Roots and Coastal Charms

Begin your journey in Sant’Antioco, an island-town connected to the mainland by an ancient Roman isthmus. Here, modern life rests directly atop layers of Phoenician, Punic, and Roman history, creating a unique atmosphere of "living antiquity."

  • The Spiritual Heart: A must-visit is the Basilica of Sant’Antioco Martire, one of the oldest and most significant churches in Sardinia. Built in the 5th century and later expanded, it holds a secret beneath its floorboards: the only Christian catacombs in Sardinia. These underground chambers were cleverly adapted from earlier Punic tombs and served as a refuge and burial site for early Christians.

  • A Walk Through Time: Spend your morning wandering through the medieval historical center. The narrow, winding streets climb toward the Savoy Fort (Forte Su Pisu), which offers a commanding view of the entire lagoon. Afterward, head down to the scenic promenade by the port. The palm-lined walkway is ideal for a slow breakfast or a late-afternoon tramonto (sunset) aperitivo.

  • A Taste of the Sea: For lunch, do not miss the opportunity to try Pilau. This signature dish of Sant’Antioco is made with toasted fregula (a local bead-like pasta) cooked slowly with fresh crustaceans and local spices. It is a rich, flavorful testament to the island's deep connection to the sea.

Do not miss this: To truly grasp the history of the island, check availability for guided tours of the Basilica and Catacombs.

  • The “Speaking” Sands of Scivu: In the afternoon, drive north toward Scivu. Often called the “Sardinian Desert,” this 3-kilometre stretch of golden sand is a sanctuary framed by high cliffs. It is famously known as the spiaggia parlante (speaking beach) because of the unique acoustic "crunch" the tiny grains of sand make under your feet. Scivu is perfect for couples who love long, meditative walks and minimal crowds.

Day 2 – Iglesias and Guspini: The Silver Capital and Mining Echoes

On the second day, move inland to explore the heart of Sardinia's industrial soul. Start your morning in Iglesias, the “City of Churches.”

  • The Silver Capital: During the 13th century, under Pisan rule, Iglesias was one of Europe’s most important economic hubs. It was known as the "Silver Capital" because the surrounding hills were incredibly rich in argentiferous lead. The city even had its own mint and legal code, the Breve di Villa di Chiesa. The Cattedrale di Santa Chiara remains a stunning testament to this opulent Pisan-Gothic era.

  • The Cammino di Santa Barbara: From Iglesias, head toward the Guspinese-Arburese mining district. This area is the centerpiece of the Cammino Minerario di Santa Barbara, a 500km historical trek. Active couples should tackle a section near the Montevecchio complex. Here, abandoned mining shafts and the elegant, decaying villas of former directors rise from the Mediterranean scrub like industrial ghosts.

Do not miss this: This region is also famous for its wines. Browse top-rated vineyard tours and wine tastings near Iglesias to sample the local Carignano del Sulcis.

Day 3 – Piscinas: The High Dunes and the Desert Sea

Your final destination is Piscinas, home to one of Europe’s most breathtaking and dramatic coastal landscapes. Here, golden dunes sculpted by the wind reach heights of 70 meters, contrasting with the wild, transparent sea.

  • The May Bloom: If you visit during the spring, particularly in May, you will witness a rare natural spectacle. The dunes are dotted with the blooming of sea lilies and wild endemic flowers. This white, delicate bloom against the golden sand and the deep blue of the sea creates a romantic atmosphere like no other..

  • Protecting the Ecosystem: It is vital to remember that the dunes of Piscinas are a strictly protected natural monument. Walking on the dunes is prohibited to prevent erosion and protect endemic flora like the sea lily and century-old junipers. Respect the signage and stick to the designated paths; the scale of these “living” mountains is best appreciated from the shoreline.

  • Logistics & Accessibility: The route to Piscinas is part of the adventure. The road is narrow and unpaved in sections, requiring you to cross two small fords (shallow streams).

Pro tip: A car with high ground clearance is highly recommended for this stretch. Compare SUV and 4x4 rental prices for your Sardinia road trip here.
